I really like the way he left his strokes very loose and spontaneous. I love the way he captured the spirit of the little boy and did not try to pretty him up.

I've been busy with some portraiture commissions. It's been great getting to know the people I'm painting and becoming part of their lives, if only for a while. It's been very enlightening to meet so many diverse people.

I've been very busy this summer. I haven't had much time for the Internet. I have been working on 6 commissioned portraits and am about to add one more. I have finished 4 of them. Also I have been working on my photography and plan to buy a new Nikon, I'm thinking about opening up a photography studio with a friend of mine as a side business. Maybe I will have some time after my commissions are finished. I want to specialize in fine art photography along the lines of Edward Steichen. I have many great ideas for unusual portraits and lighting. The portrait above is one I took of a very dear friend of mine, it is an example of the style of photography I enjoy creating.

Here is the beginning of an almost life size painting of Jesus. It will be his entire body, after he is beaten and crowned with thorns. He will be slumping and you will see the crown of thorns, the wounds on his face and body and his cloak will be cardinal red. I've photographed the entire piece but don't want to give it all away yet. So here is part of the torso and legs. Again this is the beginning stage, just to get the basics down. Also my "Leper" is coming along very well, I'm very pleased with it. I have a few more details to add and then I will be done, hopefully by the end of June.

This is a nice opportunity to show you some of the beginning work for a new commission called "The Leper" for a cathedral here in Los Angeles. It's been an idea that I have been working around in my mind for a few years. The Monsignor took a keen interest in my sketches and I have now begun the actual painting. Here is the progress shot of a portion of the painting, laying down the glazes and building up the color on the face, tunic and hair. I'm very pleased with the painting so far. I literally feel as though I am being guided and divinely inspired to paint this.

It must be this ecclesiastical rain that drives me into such a melancholia. Walking relaxes me and eventhough it's raining I'll walk this afternoon, and maybe tonight because, I have found, increasingly as time goes on, or around, or backwards, or stays still as my brain races, my heart absorbs and expels and my arteries harden that the problems of physical life, of social contact, of daily posturing and keeping my chin up, the ordinary moments of walking up a city street, opening doors or letters, saying hello to friends or stangers, looking out of windows, making telephone calls, are inexplicably made more tolerable by keeping in motion one foot in front of the other, one step at a time and hearing my footsteps hit the ground.

While looking through some of my unstretched older pieces I found this one. It's a painting of Jesus Christ after His resurrection. He has been walking down the road and encounters Thomas. You know the rest, Thomas asks him to let him touch his wounds so that he may believe he is the actual risen Jesus. I am most inspired when painting people from the Bible. I remember not being able to finish this painting because I was frustrated not to have the technical ability to put down on canvas what I could see in my mind. I didn't finish the wound where Jesus was pierced and I cut out the entire figure of Thomas from the painting. But I like the composition of it still, Jesus has a majestic quality that shines through . You can still see Thomas' finger reaching to touch Jesus' wound. You can see Jesus' posture, open and willing to allow the doubting Thomas to satisfy his unbelief. This piece is rather large it's about 44 inches tall and about 24 inches wide. I like the mood and atmosphere of it, very much.

I am now ready to finish this painting. If anyone is interested in commissioning me to complete it and have it restretched I would look forward to hearing from you with any and all questions concerning this piece. You can click on the pictures to see bigger versions of them.

This statue is supposed to be the actual likeness of Joan Of Arc. The artist created this statue after meeting Joan Of Arc and wanted to preserve it for history. The identity of this statue was hidden by giving it another name because the artist knew that it would be destroyed if it were revealed to be the actual bust of Joan of Arc. It survived this long under another name. The Joan of Arc collector that showed this picture to me, told me the entire history behind this statue and where it is now, but I can't remember all the details. When I get the info again, I will post it here. I am fascinated by it. I have painted portraits of Joan Of Arc many times and am excited to know that this is what she may have actually looked like.

All goes well with me. My commission for the Cathedral is now in its last stages. I'm coming into the home stretch as far as the hard work is concerned, and in a few days I'll be finished. After that the rest is simply a matter of adding the finishing coat of varnish and finding the perfect frame. I feel very good about it.

Not much to say except that yesterday was so windy here in Los Angeles, probably the windiest day of the year. All of my plants fell down like struck bowling pins on my front porch. Tonight I am in my studio, at work on a new commission for a church that is turning out very well. I worked all yesterday afternoon on it and an hour tonight. I am deluged with all kinds of work and could keep busy all the time but this weather is so wonderful it's hardly suitable for shutting myself in the studio all day. After a couple of hours in the sunshine at the beach it takes a terrific amount of willpower to pull myself away and go back indoors. I think I'll start taking my portable easel out when it's not so windy.

This is an ACEO I did for a $100.00 for a collector in Japan. He asked "Please make me aceo of Girl With Pearl Earring, not like Vermeer, but Christian Bach version." An aceo is a small painting that measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches typically painted on card stock or bristol paper. He's collected 3 of these this year, the same painting, of course each one comes out slightly different, I wonder what he does with them? Maybe resells them?

I just recently discovered these purple carrots, Freaky! Some friends brought over a half gallon of purple carrot juice and it was so tasty, much better than orange carrot juice, now I'm hooked. But these carrots are hard to find. I buy them at Whole Foods in Pasadena. I remember the first time I saw broc-o-flower in the market, that's pretty scary! Soilent green is people! What a screwy world we live in! I just saw a movie called "Penelope" about a girl with a pig snout instead of a nose, everybody screamed and ran away from her, then at the end she got a regular normal nose, I liked her better with the snout, she was cute that way, adorable! Oh well, there's no accounting for taste. Have you heard all the hub-bub about the planet flipping it's polarity? Has to do with the old wobble effect, that's what I call it anyway, you know how the Earth and Moon do that weird wobble thing? I like that it's slated for the exact time the Mayan calendar runs out, 21 December 2012, pretty cool! I usually try to read between the lines, sometimes it's what they're "not" saying that's more relevant, I noticed the scientists are arguing about all the effects that it will have instead of if it's going to happen or not, so I guess that means it's going to happen, cool! Gives me something to look forward too, just when I thought I'd seen everything!

And I remember about the ninth day into my solitude the tree outside my bedroom window beckoned me to paint it. The tree had become my one companion during my sickness. The first thing I saw when I woke up and the last thing I saw before I fell asleep. I'd wake up in the morning and go like this, "Good morning tree!" I'd throw off my blankets and walk to the window, open it and listen to the hundreds of sparrows singing in it's branches as it swayed in the wind.

My Sick Bed.

Well, I'm back online. I have been so sick the past two weeks that I stayed in my bed and didn't get to work at all. I started working today. The trouble was with the flu. I think I caught that H1 N1 Swine Flu. It's the worse flu I've had in my life. Two weeks ago I had taken my grandmother to the Kaiser to get her flu shot. While I was in the waiting room I was surrounded by sick people, coughing and sneezing. By the time we got out of there I must have been covered in thousands of swine germs. The next day I developed a runny nose, the day after that a fever and body aches, sweating, dizziness, nausea, weakness, violent coughing, complete loss of appetite. My sheets were soaked with persperation. After 2 days without getting up from bed I tried to stand up to get some water and nearly collapsed. The blood left my head and knees and everything began to whirl. I had to grab a chair to keep from falling down. My heart was pounding furiously, the sweat broke out in my face, and all at once I had a terrible fever. The fainting spell hit me so suddenly and so unexpectedly that I got a real scare. For a moment I thought I was having a heart attack my heart was pounding so hard that I thought I was about to die, but after calming down, I slowly lied back down and was alright except for an unusual tingling feeling. I stayed away from the studio and rested for the most part. Some friends came over and brought me some Nyquil (thank God for Nyquil) and cough drops and fruit and I sweated out the flu for two weeks. I lost 6 lbs. I'm finally coming around except for a strong lingering cough and phlegm. I suggest you get the H1 N1 vacCine, you do not want to catch this flu, no way, no how! The best of luck to everybody.

Tonight I went with some friends to see a special screening of Wuthering Heights. Samuel Goldwyn Jr was there and added some special insight into the making of this movie. He also said that this was his father's favorite movie and that his father hoped he would be remembered for this movie in particular as his legacy. Of course, I've seen the movie before, many times, but never on the big screen. So here I am, falling in love again with Laurence Olivier. His face was smoldering, larger than life, those eyes, that hair, those lips, yikes! Oh Heathcliff! Too hot to handle. No wonder Vivien Leigh went mad. I'd of lost it too!

On the last day of classes with Steven Assael, he did a portrait demonstration and these are some of the photos from that demo. From start to finish this portrait took about three hours, with a few breaks in between sessions. The model was beautiful and Assael is an absolute genius. A true modern master.

A few months ago, I had a week of studying with Steven Assael again, and it was very inspiring. Above are three of his paintings. It's my second time having the privilege of taking classes from him and I've learned so much from this incredible artist. His talent is awe inspiring, and believe me, when I tell you, there aren't many living artist who do that for me. Besides which, the man himself is so unassuming and friendly that he is a joy to study with. I am looking forward to a possible Art trip to Spain for a couple of weeks next year with him and a few other students. I hope that project does get realised. But for now, he's back in NY and I hope to visit there soon.
